SECTION 1: WHAT IS DIGITAL STORAGE?

Digital storage refers to any method or device used to save, hold, and retrieve digital data — that is, information stored in the form of numbers (0s and 1s) that a computer can read and process.

In simpler terms, digital storage is how your devices remember things — your photos, your documents, your music, your videos, and even your app data.

Without storage, a computer would have no memory. Every time you switch it off, everything would be lost. Storage is what makes it possible for you to save your work today and open it again tomorrow.

KEY TERMS TO KNOW:

  • Data: Any information stored or processed by a computer (text, images, videos, etc.)
  • Storage capacity: How much data a storage device can hold, measured in Bytes, Kilobytes (KB), Megabytes (MB), Gigabytes (GB), and Terabytes (TB).

SECTION 2: TYPES OF DIGITAL STORAGE

There are two broad categories of digital storage: Primary Storage and Secondary Storage.

A. PRIMARY STORAGE (Internal Storage)

This is the storage that is built directly inside the computer and is used while the computer is running. It is fast but temporary.

Examples include:

RAM (Random Access Memory): This is the temporary memory your computer uses while it is working. When you open a document or run an application, it is loaded into RAM. Once you switch off the computer, everything in RAM disappears. This is why you must always save your work! Nigerian students often experience this when NEPA cuts light and an unsaved assignment is lost.

ROM (Read Only Memory): This stores permanent instructions that the computer needs to start up. You cannot change what is in ROM under normal conditions. It keeps its data even when the computer is off.


B. SECONDARY STORAGE (External or Permanent Storage)

This is where data is saved permanently or for a long time. These devices keep your data even when the computer is turned off.

1. Hard Disk Drive (HDD): The most common storage device inside desktop computers and laptops. It uses spinning magnetic disks to store data. Most school computers and home PCs in Nigeria have HDDs. They come in capacities from 250GB to several Terabytes.

2. Solid State Drive (SSD): A newer and faster type of storage that uses flash memory (no moving parts). SSDs are more durable, faster, and quieter than HDDs, but they are more expensive. Many modern laptops now come with SSDs.

3. USB Flash Drive (Thumb Drive / Pendrive): A small, portable device you can plug into a USB port. Very popular among Nigerian students for moving files between school computers and home. They range from 4GB to 256GB and are affordable.

4. Memory Card (SD Card): Used in phones, cameras, and tablets. If you use an Android phone and you have expanded your storage, you have used an SD card. Common sizes are 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB.

5. Optical Discs (CD, DVD, Blu-ray): These use laser light to read and write data. While they are becoming less popular today, CDs and DVDs were widely used in Nigeria for music, software, and films. A standard CD holds about 700MB; a DVD holds 4.7GB.

6. External Hard Drive: A portable version of the internal HDD or SSD, connected via USB. Great for backing up large amounts of data. Many photographers, videographers, and professionals in Nigeria use these to store their work.


SECTION 3: WHAT IS CLOUD COMPUTING?

Cloud computing is the delivery of computing services — including storage, software, and processing power — over the internet, instead of using physical hardware stored on your premises.

The "cloud" is not a real cloud in the sky. It is a network of powerful computers (called servers) located in large buildings called data centres, spread across different parts of the world. When you save something to the cloud, it is sent through the internet and stored on these remote servers.

SECTION 4: TYPES OF CLOUD STORAGE SERVICES

Dropbox: A file hosting service that allows you to save and share files easily across devices.

OneDrive: Microsoft's cloud storage, built into Windows computers and linked to Microsoft Office.

Amazon S3: Used mostly by businesses and developers for large-scale storage.

1. Access from anywhere: As long as you have internet access, you can reach your files from any device — at home, in school, or even in another state. A student in Kano can access a document stored on Google Drive from a school in Abuja.

2. Reduced cost of hardware: You do not need to buy expensive storage devices for everything. A free Google account gives you 15GB of storage at no cost.

4. Risk of hacking: If your password is weak or stolen, someone else could access your cloud account and read or delete your files.

5. Dependence on service providers: If the cloud provider shuts down their service or has a technical issue, you temporarily lose access to your data.


SECTION 7: DATA BACKUP — WHY IT MATTERS

Data backup means making a copy of your data and storing it somewhere different from the original, so that if the original is lost, damaged, or corrupted, you can restore it from the backup copy.

WHY BACKUP IS IMPORTANT IN NIGERIA:

  • Power surges from unstable electricity can corrupt or destroy hard drives.
  • Laptop theft is a real concern in many Nigerian cities.
  • Accidental deletion happens to everyone.
  • Viruses and malware can wipe your data.
  • Hardware failures are common in older computers.

TYPES OF BACKUP:

Full Backup: A complete copy of all your data is saved. Takes more space and time but is very thorough.

Incremental Backup: Only the data that has changed since the last backup is saved. Faster and uses less space.

Differential Backup: Saves everything that has changed since the last full backup. A middle ground between full and incremental.

THE 3-2-1 BACKUP RULE:
