WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?

The word "artificial" means something made by humans, not nature. The word "intelligence" refers to the ability to think, learn, and solve problems. So when you put the two together, Artificial Intelligence simply means the ability of a computer or machine to think, learn, and solve problems the way a human being does.

More formally, Artificial Intelligence is the branch of computer science that focuses on building machines and software that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. These tasks include understanding language, recognizing images, making decisions, and learning from experience.

Think of it this way: when you study hard and learn to solve a maths problem, your brain is storing that knowledge and using it later. AI works in a similar way — it is trained using large amounts of data, and it uses what it has learned to make smart decisions or predictions.

A simple local example: when you open the Spotify or Audiomack app and it suggests songs you might like, it is not a human sitting somewhere manually choosing songs for you. An AI system is analysing your past listening habits and recommending similar songs. That is intelligence — just not the human kind.


TYPES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

AI is not just one thing. Scientists and technology experts have grouped AI into different types based on what it can do and how smart it is. There are two main ways of classifying AI:

Classification Based on Capability

This is about how powerful or how smart the AI system is.

Narrow AI (Weak AI)

This is the most common type of AI we see and use today. Narrow AI is designed to do one specific task very well. It cannot do anything outside that single task, but within that task, it performs excellently.

Examples include:

  • The face recognition feature on your Android phone
  • Google Translate, which translates text from one language to another
  • The spam filter in your Gmail that automatically moves junk messages to the spam folder
  • A chess-playing computer program

You will notice that while Google Translate is very good at translating, it cannot play chess or recognize your face. That is what makes it "narrow" — it is smart in one area only.

General AI (Strong AI)

General AI refers to a machine that can think and perform any intellectual task just like a human being — not just one task, but any task. This type of AI does not fully exist yet. Scientists are still working on it. It is more of a future goal than a present reality.

Super AI

Super AI goes even beyond human intelligence. A Super AI system would be smarter than the most intelligent humans on earth. This type exists only in science fiction movies and books for now. However, researchers continue to explore the possibilities.


Classification Based on Functionality

This second classification looks at how AI systems behave and respond to their environment.

Reactive Machines

These are the most basic type. They can react to situations and make decisions, but they cannot learn from the past and have no memory. IBM's Deep Blue chess computer is a famous example. It can defeat a chess grandmaster, but it does not remember the previous game or learn from it.

Limited Memory AI

This is a step up. These AI systems can look at past experiences and use that information to make better decisions. Self-driving cars are a great example. They observe other vehicles, pedestrians, and road conditions over time and use that stored experience to navigate safely.

Theory of Mind AI

This type is still being developed. The idea is to build AI that can understand human emotions, beliefs, and intentions — essentially reading people the way humans read each other. We are not there yet, but research is ongoing.

Self-Aware AI

The most advanced and most futuristic category. A self-aware AI would be conscious of its own existence, almost like a living being with feelings and self-understanding. This remains theoretical for now.


HOW DOES AI ACTUALLY WORK?

You might be wondering — how does a machine "learn"? Here is a simplified explanation.

AI systems are trained using a technique called Machine Learning. This means the computer is given a huge amount of data (for example, thousands of photos of cats), and it studies that data until it can recognize a cat on its own — even in photos it has never seen before.

Another related concept is Deep Learning, which goes even further. Instead of simple rules, deep learning uses layers of processing (similar to how the human brain has layers of neurons) to analyse very complex patterns like speech, video, and text.

So in summary: AI + Machine Learning + Deep Learning = the smart technology you use every day, from chatbots to recommendation engines to voice assistants.


APPLICATIONS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN DAILY LIFE

This is arguably the most exciting part of the lesson. AI is not just something you read about in textbooks — it is already around you. Let us explore where AI shows up in your daily life, especially in the Nigerian context.

1. Education and Learning

In Nigeria, several educational platforms are beginning to use AI. Apps like Khan Academy and Google's learning tools use AI to track a student's progress and adjust the difficulty of questions based on how well that student is doing. If you answer many questions correctly, the app makes the next ones harder. If you struggle, it gives you easier questions and more explanations. That is AI adapting to your learning pace.

AI-powered writing tools also help students improve their essays by detecting grammar errors and suggesting better sentences.

2. Communication and Social Media

Every time you type a message on WhatsApp and you see word suggestions popping up — that is AI. The same goes for when Instagram or TikTok seems to know exactly the kind of videos that will keep you scrolling. Social media platforms use AI to study what you like, what you spend time watching, and who you interact with, and then they use that data to keep your feed interesting.

3. E-Commerce and Online Shopping

Platforms like Jumia and Konga use AI to recommend products to customers. When you view a pair of shoes on Jumia and then see similar shoes being suggested on your homepage — that is AI doing its job. It helps businesses sell more products while also helping customers find what they need faster.

4. Banking and Financial Services

Nigerian banks and fintech companies use AI heavily. When your bank sends you an alert saying "unusual activity detected on your account," that is an AI fraud detection system at work. It noticed a transaction that does not match your normal spending pattern and raised an alarm. 5. Healthcare

While this is still growing in Nigeria, the potential is enormous given the shortage of specialist doctors in many states.

A farmer in Benue or Kano can take a picture of a diseased yam leaf, upload it, and an AI system will identify the disease and suggest treatment. ADVANTAGES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

  • AI works without getting tired. Unlike humans, machines powered by AI can work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without needing rest or breaks.
  • AI reduces human error significantly in tasks like data processing, medical diagnosis, and financial calculations.
  • AI makes services faster and more efficient. Think about how quickly an ATM or a banking app processes your transaction.
  • It opens up new job opportunities in technology, data science, AI development, and related fields.
  • AI can handle dangerous tasks — like exploring disaster zones or detecting landmines — keeping humans safe.

DISADVANTAGES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

  • AI can cause job losses. As machines take over routine tasks, some jobs may no longer need humans. Factory workers, customer service representatives, and data entry clerks are among those most affected.
  • AI systems can be biased if they are trained on unfair or incomplete data. For example, a facial recognition AI trained mainly on light-skinned faces may fail to correctly identify dark-skinned individuals.
  • High cost of development and maintenance. Building AI systems requires expensive hardware, software, and skilled experts.
  • AI has no genuine emotions or moral judgment. It does what it is programmed to do, which can lead to harmful outcomes if used irresponsibly.
  • Privacy concerns. AI systems that collect data about users can be misused to spy on people or sell their private information.

ETHICAL AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

As powerful as AI is, it must be used responsibly. Here are some important things to keep in mind:

Privacy matters. Many AI systems collect your personal data — your location, your browsing habits, your voice. Always be careful about the apps and platforms you give access to your personal information.

AI is not always right. Never take everything an AI tool says as the absolute truth. AI systems can make mistakes, especially when dealing with complex or sensitive matters. Always verify important information from trusted human sources.

Avoid over-dependence. Using AI tools to do your homework entirely is not a good idea. These tools are meant to assist your learning, not replace it. Critical thinking and creativity are skills that AI cannot develop for you.
