Basic Computer Hardware Components

Learn about computer hardware, input and output devices, their functions, and simple maintenance tips — aligned with the Nigerian NERDC JSS 1 curricul




INTRODUCTION

Walk into any bank, school, hospital, or government office in Nigeria today, and you will find computers sitting on desks, doing work that used to take people hours to finish. From the JAMB CBT centres in Abuja and Lagos to the cybercafés in Aba and Kaduna, computers have become part of everyday Nigerian life. But have you ever stopped to wonder — what exactly makes up a computer? What are those parts you see people touching, clicking, and staring at?


That is exactly what this lesson is about. Before you can learn how to use a computer properly, you need to understand what it is made of. Just like a car has an engine, tyres, and a steering wheel — all working together — a computer also has different parts, and each one has a job to do.

WHAT IS COMPUTER HARDWARE?

Let us start from the beginning. The word "hardware" simply refers to the physical parts of a computer — the parts you can actually touch and feel. If you can pick it up, plug it in, or press it, it is most likely hardware.

Computer hardware is different from software. Software is the set of programmes and instructions that tell the computer what to do — things like Microsoft Word, Google Chrome, or a game you play. You cannot hold software in your hands. But hardware? You can see it, carry it, and — unfortunately — break it if you are not careful.

Hardware components work together as a system. None of them is very useful on its own. The keyboard needs the computer to process what you type, and the monitor needs the computer to send it something to display. Everything depends on everything else.


CATEGORIES OF COMPUTER HARDWARE

Computer hardware is generally grouped into three broad categories:

Input Devices — These send information into the computer. 

Output Devices — These bring information out of the computer for the user to see, hear, or use. 

Processing and Storage Devices — These include the CPU (the brain of the computer) and memory units that store and process data. (We will cover these in more detail in later topics.)

For this lesson, our main focus is on input and output devices.


INPUT DEVICES — SENDING INFORMATION INTO THE COMPUTER

An input device is any hardware component that allows a user to enter data or instructions into a computer system. In simple terms, input devices are how you "talk" to the computer.

Here are the most common input devices you should know:

The Keyboard

The keyboard is probably the most popular input device in the world. It looks a lot like a typewriter and has rows of keys with letters, numbers, and special symbols. When you press a key, a signal is sent to the computer, which then displays the corresponding character on the screen.


In Nigeria, you will find keyboards in computer labs, offices, internet cafés, and even attached to some smart TVs. Standard keyboards have about 104 keys, but laptop keyboards are slightly smaller.

The Mouse

The mouse is a small handheld device that you move across a flat surface to control a pointer (cursor) on the screen. It usually has two buttons (left and right) and a scroll wheel in the middle. You use it to click on icons, open files, and navigate menus.


The name "mouse" came from early researchers who thought its shape and attached wire looked like a tiny mouse with a tail!

The Scanner

A scanner is used to copy physical documents or images and convert them into digital files that the computer can store or display. For example, if a school in Rivers State wants to keep digital records of students' birth certificates, they can use a scanner to create a digital copy of each document.



The Microphone

A microphone allows users to input sound into the computer. It captures your voice and converts it into digital data. Today, microphones are built into most laptops and smartphones. They are used for voice calls, recording audio, and voice search.



The Webcam

A webcam is a small camera connected to the computer that captures live video. During the COVID-19 period in Nigeria, many students and teachers used webcams for online classes via platforms like Zoom and Google Meet. Webcams are input devices because they send visual data into the computer.



The Joystick

A joystick is mainly used for playing computer games. It has a stick-like handle that can be moved in different directions to control movement on the screen. Many gaming lounges in Nigerian cities use joysticks alongside gaming consoles.



The Touchscreen

Many modern devices — phones, tablets, ATMs, and even some laptops — have touchscreens. A touchscreen acts as both an input and output device. When you tap or swipe on it, you are giving input to the computer.




OUTPUT DEVICES — WHAT THE COMPUTER GIVES BACK TO YOU

After the computer receives your input and processes it, it needs a way to communicate the result back to you. That is where output devices come in. An output device is any hardware that presents processed information from the computer to the user.

The Monitor (Screen)

The monitor is the most common output device. It looks like a television screen and displays text, images, videos, and everything else the computer wants to show you. Modern monitors are flat and slim (called LCD or LED monitors), unlike the older, bulky ones (CRT monitors) that were common in Nigerian schools and offices in the early 2000s.



The Printer

A printer produces a hard copy — a physical, printed version — of documents and images from the computer. If you type an assignment in Microsoft Word and want to submit it on paper, you send it to the printer. In Nigeria, you will find printers in business centres, schools, banks, and offices everywhere.

There are different types of printers:

  • Inkjet printers (common in homes and small offices)
  • Laser printers (faster, used in big offices)
  • Dot matrix printers (older type, still used in some banks for printing receipts)

The Speaker

Speakers output sound from the computer. Whether you are watching a Nollywood film, listening to music, or attending an online class, the speakers are what allow you to hear the audio. Some computers have built-in speakers, while others use external ones connected via cable or Bluetooth.



The Projector

A projector is used to display a large image of the computer screen onto a wall or white board. Teachers use projectors to show lessons to an entire class, and business people use them for presentations. Many Nigerian secondary schools now use projectors in their ICT labs and classrooms.



The Headphones / Earphones

Headphones and earphones are personal audio output devices. Instead of broadcasting sound to the whole room, they deliver it directly to one listener. Students use them in computer labs, libraries, and language labs.



The Plotter

A plotter is a special type of output device used to print large drawings, designs, and architectural plans. Engineers and architects use plotters to produce precise technical drawings. You may find them in engineering firms or printing companies in cities like Lagos and Port Harcourt.




PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS IN EVERYDAY NIGERIAN LIFE

Understanding hardware is not just for passing exams. Here is how these devices show up in real life around us:

  • At the bank, you use a keyboard and touchscreen to operate the ATM (a special computer). The ATM screen (monitor) is an output device that shows your balance, and the receipt printer gives you a printed output.

  • During WAEC and NECO CBT exams, students sit in front of computers with monitors, keyboards, and mice. Knowing how these work gives you confidence.

  • Market traders in Onitsha and Lagos who use POS (Point of Sale) machines are interacting with a small computer that has a touchscreen input and a receipt printer for output.

  • NYSC orientation camp registrations, NIN enrolment, and BVN capture all use biometric scanners (input devices) and computers with screens (output devices).


SIMPLE MAINTENANCE PRACTICES FOR COMPUTER HARDWARE

One of the best things you can do as a young ICT student is learn how to take care of computer equipment. Computer hardware is expensive, and poor maintenance can damage it quickly. Here are some simple but important habits:

Keep computers clean. Dust is a silent enemy of computers. It blocks ventilation holes and causes the machine to overheat. Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the monitor and keyboard regularly. Avoid using water or wet cloths directly on any hardware.

Handle hardware with care. Never slam the keyboard, drop the mouse, or press the monitor screen with your fingers unnecessarily. These actions can cause damage over time.

Keep food and drinks away. Liquids spilled on a keyboard or laptop can cause a short circuit and permanently damage the device. Many computer labs in Nigeria have a strict "no food or drink" rule for this reason.

Shut down properly. Always shut down the computer using the proper procedure — through the Start menu or power button — rather than just pulling the plug. Sudden power cuts can corrupt files and damage the hard drive.

Use a surge protector. Nigeria's power supply situation means voltage fluctuations are common. A surge protector or UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) protects your computer from sudden power surges that can burn internal components.

Keep the environment cool and dry. Computers work best in cool, dry environments. Avoid placing them near windows where rain can enter, or in very hot, stuffy rooms without ventilation.

Report damaged cables immediately. Frayed or broken cables are dangerous. If you notice a damaged cable in your school lab, report it to your teacher right away. Never use equipment with exposed wires.


SAFETY AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

As a student using computer equipment, you have certain responsibilities:

Do not tamper with hardware components. Opening the computer casing or removing parts without permission can damage the equipment and may be considered sabotage.

Respect shared equipment. Computers in school labs belong to everyone. Treat them as carefully as you would want someone else to treat your own things.

Avoid downloading or connecting unknown devices. Plugging in a random flash drive from an unknown source can introduce viruses that damage the computer's software — and eventually, its hardware performance too.

Report technical issues rather than trying to fix them yourself. If something goes wrong in the lab, tell your teacher. Attempting to repair hardware without training can make things worse.


CLASSROOM AND HOME ACTIVITIES

Activity 1 — Hardware Hunt Look around your home or classroom and write down five objects you think could be computer hardware. For each one, write whether it is an input device, an output device, or neither.

Activity 2 — Label the Diagram Draw a simple computer system (monitor, keyboard, mouse, CPU box, and speakers). Label each part and state whether it is an input or output device.

Activity 3 — Maintenance Role Play In groups, act out a scenario where a student spills water on a keyboard. Discuss: What happened? What should have been done to prevent it? What should be done now?

Activity 4 — Device Sorting Game Write the names of ten hardware devices on separate pieces of paper. Then sort them into two groups: INPUT and OUTPUT. Compare your groupings with a classmate and discuss any differences.

Turn the keyboard upside down to drain the water and let it dry completely — for at least 24–48 hours — before using it again. If it belongs to your school, report the incident to your teacher immediately.

Can a printer be both an input and an output device? Standard printers are output devices because they produce printed copies of documents. However, a multifunction printer (also called an all-in-one printer) that includes a scanner can also act as an input device when it scans documents into the computer.

How often should computer hardware be cleaned? Ideally, computer equipment should be dusted and cleaned at least once a week in busy environments like school labs, and at least once or twice a month in home settings. Regular cleaning prevents dust buildup, which can cause overheating and hardware failure.
