If there is one piece of software every student must understand well, it is the operating system. The operating system — commonly abbreviated as OS — is the master program that loads the moment you turn on any computing device. It stays active the entire time the device is on and shuts down only when you power off.
Everything else — your apps, your files, your internet connection, your screen display — depends entirely on the operating system to work.
You have already used an operating system, even if you never called it that. If you have typed a document on a Windows laptop, used an Android phone, or played games on a phone or computer, you have used an operating system.
Common Examples of Operating Systems
Windows 10 and Windows 11 — the operating system found on most laptops and desktop computers in Nigerian schools, offices, and homes.

1. PROCESS MANAGEMENT
A modern computer handles many tasks at the same time. Right now, as you read this, your phone might be downloading an update, playing background music, and running WhatsApp — all at once. This is called multitasking, and your OS is the one making it possible.
2. MEMORY MANAGEMENT
RAM — Random Access Memory — is the short-term working memory of a computer. It is where all active programs and data are temporarily stored while in use. 3. FILE MANAGEMENT
